Get some Highlights from our TAP 2009 ParticipantsWe successfully accomplished phase 2 of TAP 2009 with the Interim Seminar in Cologne. Sabine Klensch stated, that, "we have received some very positive feedback regarding the internships assigned to students this year." Some of the participants talked about their experience in Germany so far. Take a look:

| Raymond Edgerly's First Experiences Abroad "TAP experiences have given me a very good, comprehensive education. The events and lectures are very helpful and amazing and a half, and I also thought that getting to know other members has also helped me grow lots personally, and gave me answers to some personal questions that I've been asking for quite a while. I've never been in an environment quite like TAP's before, and I was really glad to have had the opportunity to experience it. Since it's also my first time in Germany, I think that being outside of my American culture and having TAP as my introduction to Germany has had a huge impact on me. I never would've guessed that I'd grow this much if I were asked six months ago." (Raymond Edgerly, MI, TAP 2009) |
Whitney Zahn on National German Television
"I was incredibly fortunate to get a position in the marketing department of Saint-Gobain Sekurit in Aachen, Germany. My responsibilities here mostly involve updating information on Saint-Gobain’s competition. But then Saint-Gobain Sekurit did an experiment in cooperation with the public TV station WGR. I got to tag along and take pictures for the Intranet site and wrote an article in German and English presenting the results. I was actually there during the filming and appear in a short segment! It's only three seconds long, but you can see it at www.daserste.de/plusminus."

| Zach Kimberling Designs New Buildings
"My positive work experience for Schaller Architekten BDA RIBA and living in Stuttgart has made me seriously consider obtaining my Masters degree from a German University. The fundamental attitude towards building is completely different. In the US, the two major drivers of design are cost and speed, whereas architects in Germany are more concerned about performance and durability. We are currently working on designing an addition to a school in Neu-Ulm to Passivhaus standards.
Stuttgart has plenty of other things going for it as well: Maultaschen, Kässpätzle, die Stäffle, not to mention Mercedes and Porsche." (Zach Kimberling, MO, TAP 2009) Read more about Zach's experience. |

The TAP Presidential Election Another highlight of the interim seminar was the election of our new TAP 2009 co-president. This year’s candidates were Kiley Kost and Erik Tasker. Kiley studies at the University of Minnesota German Studies and Global Studies. Her focus on Sustainable Development helps her current work as an intern at the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung e.V. in Berlin where Renewable Energies play a major role in the everyday business. Erik Tasker focuses on Business and International Business at the University of Wisconsin. At his internship at U.S. Commercial Services, Erik is able to put his theoretical knowledge into practical use. Both students developed great presentations where they showed their dedication to the program. With a very tight result Kiley won the election and is now TAP’s fifth co-president. With her engagement we have another great member to keep our TAP Alumni Network growing. Kiley is looking forward to meet all alumni at TAP’s annual reunion in early 2010.

Kiley Kost's "Grußwort" to the TAP AlumniDear TAP affiliates past and present,
Grüße aus Berlin! My name is Kiley and I am happy to represent the TAP 2009.
I still have one more month at my internship at the Kondrad-Adenauar-Stiftung here in Berlin. I work in the Politics and Consulting division in the field of Energy and Environmental Policy. My internship placement fits perfectly with my interests, combining politics, international relations, and social and environmental justice, all while being in Germany.
Even though most of us are still busy with our internships, I am already looking forward to sharing the rest of our experiences in the alumni network. The Transatlantic Program will remain with us all long after we return; not only presenting professional opportunities, but also as a platform for cultural inspection and comparison. It will be interesting to see how the learning process continues after returning to the US.
This fall I will return to Minneapolis to finish up my degrees in German Studies, Global Studies, and Sustainability Studies. Right now there so many possibilities for me after graduation, thanks in part to the TAP.
Thanks to the 2009 participants and coordinators for a wonderful summer. I wish everyone the best of luck for the remainder of their internships and I look forward to our interactions with the other alumni.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Kiley Kost
